He was a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and, at that time, was a candidate for the S.J.D. at Harvard Law School. He started his professorial career at BC Law teaching Business Associations in both the day and evening divisions. He went on to teach constitutional, communciations, and national secuirty law over the next 31 years, and retired from active teaching duties in the spring of 2001.

He is co-author of National Security Law and Legal Problems of the Poor. He served on the Steering Committee of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Our class recalls with fondness Professor Berney’s devotion to the advancement of civil rights in the 1960s and the work that several of our classmates undertook as part of  “Berney’s Raiders” to promote civil liberties while in law school. (This was the subject of an earlier email to our class.)

Professor Berney is now 88 years old and lives with his son in the Boston area.  His health precludes him from joining us at our reunion, and he wishes us a very happy reunion. 86-berney Back to newsletter >>
