Hon. Julie Johnstone Bernard

Bernard-YearbookJudge Julie Johnstone Bernard serves as the first justice of the Brockton District Court in Massachusetts. She was appointed to the bench in 2002. Julie says, “I am really enjoying my work in the district court, particularly as a member of the District Court Committee on Continuing Legal Education, where I have the opportunity to train and mentor new judges as they start their legal careers.”

Julie is also a member of the District Court Working Group on Alternative Dispute Resolution, the Trial Court Task Force on Diversity & Cultural Competence, and the Commission on Judicial Conduct. She previously served as a member of the District Court Appellate Division.

Prior to her appointment, Julie was a senior counsel for Keyspan Energy Inc., litigation counsel for Verizon Inc., an associate at Segal & Feinberg, assistant general counsel for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, and a staff attorney for the Committee for Public Counsel Services.

Since graduating from BC Law, Julie has stayed involved with the school through the Black Alumni Network (BAN) as a member and officer for several years. In addition, Julie has other frequent reminders of BC Law: “I guess you can say I have a daily connection and reminder–my husband, Arthur Bernard ’83.” The Bernards and their two children live in Duxbury, Mass., which Julie notes is another connection to BC Law: “Duxbury is a magnet for BC Law couples–our classmates Brian and Amy Cook also live in town.” We hope to see all our Duxbury classmates at our 30th reunion!
